Second-Hand Bedside Crib Checklist: What to Check Before You Buy

Second-Hand Bedside Crib Checklist: What to Check Before You Buy

Helping parents inspect a used bedside crib before bringing it home.

Buying a second-hand bedside crib can be an excellent way to save money while giving a quality baby product a second life. Many premium bedside cribs are only used for a relatively short period before being stored away or sold, making them a popular choice for parents looking to reduce costs without compromising on quality.

Whether you're considering a Chicco Next2Me, SnüzPod, Tutti Bambini CoZee, Joie Roomie, Kinderkraft Neste Up, Silver Cross, Maxi-Cosi Iora, Clair de Lune, Nuby, Red Kite, Hauck or another bedside crib, it's important to carry out a thorough inspection before your baby sleeps in it.

This practical checklist has been designed to help you identify common signs of wear, understand which issues can often be repaired, and recognise when replacing a part—or the crib itself—may be the better option.

Throughout this guide you'll also find links to our more detailed setup guides, repair articles and replacement part collections, helping you restore and maintain many popular bedside cribs rather than replacing them unnecessarily.

Second-Hand Bedside Crib Inspection Checklist

Before purchasing or using a second-hand bedside crib, work through each section below.

1. Confirm the Model

Before inspecting anything else, identify exactly which bedside crib you are looking at.

1.1 Manufacturer Label

Locate the manufacturer's label and confirm the brand and model.

Many manufacturers produce several versions of the same bedside crib, so identifying the correct model now will make finding compatible replacement parts much easier later.

1.2 Instruction Manual

Download the correct instruction manual where available.

This will help you confirm that all parts are present and show how the crib should be assembled.

1.3 Product Recalls

Check whether the model has been subject to any manufacturer recalls or important safety notices.

1.4 Missing Parts

Before purchasing, make sure all major components appear to be included.

These typically include:

  • Mattress
  • Mattress support board
  • Safety straps
  • Frame
  • Legs
  • Side panel
  • Fixings

2. Inspect the Frame

The frame provides the structural support for the entire crib.

2.1 Cracks

Inspect all plastic and metal components for visible cracks.

2.2 Bent Frame

Check that the frame sits square and hasn't been bent during storage or transport.

2.3 Loose Joints

The crib should feel solid with minimal movement.

2.4 Locking Mechanisms

Test every locking mechanism to ensure it operates correctly.

3. Mattress Inspection

The mattress is one of the most important parts of any bedside crib.

3.1 Replace the Mattress

It is widely recommended that each baby sleeps on a new mattress rather than a second-hand one with an unknown history.

Over time, mattresses can become worn, misshapen or contaminated with moisture, mould, bacteria or allergens.

For these reasons, many health organisations recommend replacing a used mattress before your baby sleeps on it, particularly if its history is unknown or it shows signs of wear or damage.

3.2 While You're Replacing the Mattress...

If your bedside crib uses a separate mattress support board, it's also worth inspecting this at the same time.

Over the years, mattress boards can become warped, cracked, swollen through moisture exposure or damaged during storage. Spills and damp conditions may also affect the board beneath the mattress, even when the mattress itself appears to be in good condition.

If the mattress board shows signs of damage or deterioration, we recommend replacing it at the same time as the mattress to provide a fresh, properly supported sleeping surface.

4.3 Water Damage

4.4 Mould

4.5 Sagging

If the mattress support board no longer provides a firm, level surface, it should be replaced before use.

5. Zip Inspection

Many bedside cribs use zips for removable side panels and fabric sections.

5.1 Missing Zip Pull

A missing pull is usually one of the easiest zip problems to solve.

5.2 Broken Zip Slider

A worn or damaged slider can often cause the zip to separate behind the runner.

5.3 Missing Zip Teeth

Inspect the teeth carefully for gaps or damage.

5.4 Zip Separating

If the zip opens behind the slider, inspect both the teeth and the slider for wear.

5.5 Stiff Zip

Check for trapped fabric, dirt or other obstructions before assuming replacement is required.

Every height position should lock securely and both sides should remain level.

8. Side Panel

8.1 Release Buttons

8.2 Zip Alignment

8.3 Locking Mechanisms

Operate the side panel several times to ensure smooth operation.

9. Wheels (If Fitted)

9.1 Wheel Movement

9.3 Wheel Damage

Confirm all wheels rotate correctly and brakes engage fully.

10. Fabric Condition

10.1 Tears

10.2 Loose Stitching

10.3 Heavy Staining

Minor cosmetic wear is normal, but damaged structural stitching or mould should be investigated before use.

Thinking About Replacing the Entire Crib?

Many second-hand bedside cribs can be restored successfully with replacement mattress boards, mattresses or minor repairs.

However, if the frame is structurally damaged, multiple essential components are missing, or the crib can no longer be restored safely, replacing it may be the most practical option.
